Islamic centre and archery club team up for summer of sport

Shropshire-based Craven Arms Islamic Centre and Long Mynd Archers partnered up to ensure everyone was welcome to have a go at archery during the summer.

With support from their local Active Partnership, Energize, the Craven Arms Islamic Centre successfully bid for funding from Sport England to help their members try a number of activities and sports with archery, proving to be an extremely popular option.

Sohayb and Asiya worked hard with Sue from Long Mynd Archers to make arrangements to offer as many people as possible from the centre the chance to try archery. As one of the most accessible sports around, it's fun and inclusive - perfect for anyone wanting to try something new.

In the Islamic faith, archery is also a Sunnah sport, so it carries additional significance, which is why Archery GB delivers Project Rimaya to engage with Muslim communities through the sport.

Together, the Craven Arms Islamic Centre and Long Mynd Archers organised various archery opportunities this summer:

  • Coaches from Long Mynd Archers delivered a soft archery training session so that the centre could arrange their own sessions
  • Long Mynd Archers delivered a full six session beginners' course for children and young people with a soft archery option for children under 8
  • Male-only and female-only taster sessions at Long Mynd Archers to support cultural preferences

At the recent beginners' course for young people, participants and parents could also spend time talking with members of the club to get to know them, all whilst ensuring a safe and enjoyable induction into the sport.

Imam Sohayb, from the Craven Arms Islamic Centre, said: "It was a first time for many of the participants and they thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the reasons it was very enjoyable is that we did it as a community, so children had their friends alongside them, and that really boosted their enthusiasm."

Sue, from the club, said: "It was hard work, but enjoyable seeing everyone enjoying themselves shooting the bows, even the young ones on the soft archery were very focused."

It is hoped that some of the people from the centre join the club or continue taking part in soft archery sessions at the centre.

Raheela, a local mum, brought along four children to the recent beginners' course. She said: "They are very happy coming – I don't need to push them to come along, even on a Sunday, and they really enjoy it!

"When they are coming here, they are learning new skills, focusing, their minds are active, and they are meeting together and learning how to work together with the group.

"It's keeping them from screen time at home, and balancing what they are learning with technology with physical learning."

Helen Smedley, one of Archery GB's Sport Development Officers, said: "Archery is for everyone, regardless of your background, age, or even physical ability, so it's been really great to see these long-planned initiatives take place over the summer!

"Aside from its brilliant social appeal, archery has many health benefits for both body and mind."
