How do I prepare for a competition?

Preparing for your first archery competition can be overwhelming, but with the right mindset and preparation, you can feel confident and ready to take on the challenge. This article provides essential tips to help you build both physical and mental stamina, organise your equipment, and develop strategies to overcome setbacks.

Competing in archery can be both exciting and nervewracking. While everyone prepares differently, there are some key steps you can take to feel confident and ready on competition day.

Physical preparation

  • Build stamina: Competitions can be long days, so gradually increase your shooting time and incorporate warm-up and cool-down routines into your practice.
  • Practice your round: Work out what round you’ll be shooting and practice it. If it’s not one that you’ve shot before, you don’t want to turn up on the day and be unprepared, so practice.

Mental preparation

  • Manage anxiety: If you’re someone who’s prone to anxiety or panic, devise some strategies that you can
implement on the day to help you calm down. Breathing techniques are really good for this.
  • Learn from others: Chat with experienced archers to gain insights into competition day routines and strategies.
  • Embrace setbacks: Archery, like any sport, has its ups and downs. Learn to view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Analyse what went wrong, make adjustments, and move on.

Equipment and logistics

  • Check your gear: Inspect your equipment thoroughly, ensuring everything is in good working order. Order any necessary replacements well in advance.
  • Know your competition: Familiarise yourself with the competition details, including location, schedule, and rules. These should be available on the competition's website or via email from the Tournament Officer.
  • Pack early: Pack your bag the night before so that it’s ready to go in the morning. Don’t forget the snacks and drinks – there can be a lot of waiting around at competitions and you’ll need something to combat the tiredness.
  • Plan ahead: Double check the competition prospectus in case there is any information on how to find the venue and remember to factor in time for traffic and other delays.

Competition day essentials

  • Fuel your body: Some archers swear by a big breakfast to fuel their shooting,  whereas others suggest something light is best. You know how you perform best, so do what works for you. Remember to bring snacks and drinks to maintain energy levels throughout the day.
  • Bring the essentials: Don't forget your spares, pens, and any other necessary items. Here's a handy list of things you should bring with you.

By following these tips and developing your own preparation routine, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy your first archery competition. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and learn from the experience - every archer's journey is unique, so enjoy the process, learn from your experiences, and most importantly, have fun!
