Your Robin Hood moment awaits: Start Archery Week is here!

Ever wondered if you have the focus of an archer? From 9–17 May, clubs across the country are inviting you to find out.

Archery is one of the most inclusive sports in the UK. Whether you are 8 or 80, a complete beginner, or someone looking to get back into a hobby, there is a place for you on the shooting line. No equipment? No problem. Our clubs provide everything you need to get started safely.

First time at the range? Here's exactly what to expect during Start Archery Week.

So, you've seen the posters, spotted an event on our map, and you're ready to channel your inner Robin Hood (or Katniss Everdeen). But if you've never held a bow before, the idea of stepping onto a shooting line can feel a little daunting.

Don't worry – we've all been there! To help calm those first-day nerves, here is your step-by-step guide to what happens when you arrive at a Start Archery Week event.

  • The warm welcome: When you arrive, you'll be greeted by club volunteers (look for the smiling faces in club shirts!). They'll help you register and introduce you to your coach or instructor for the session. Archery is a hugely social sport, so expect a lot of "hellos" before you even see a bow.
  • Safety first: Before anyone touches a piece of equipment, we'll run through the golden rules. Safety is our number one priority. You'll learn about the shooting line and the whistle commands.
  • Getting kitted out: You don't need to bring a thing! The club will provide:
    - The bow: usually a recurve bow, which is beginner-friendly and lightweight
    - The armguard: a guard that clips onto your arm to protect it from the bowstring
    - The finger tab: a small piece of leather to keep your fingertips comfortable as you pull the string
  • Your first ends: Your coach will show you how to stand (side-on to the target), how to "nock" your arrow onto the string, and how to aim. You’ll shoot a set of arrows – known as an "end." Spoiler alert: Most people are surprised by how quiet and meditative the moment of release is. And yes, hitting the "boss" (the big straw or foam target) for the first time is an incredible feeling!
  • Collecting your arrows: Once everyone has finished shooting and the whistle blows, you'll walk together to the targets. You'll learn the safe way to pull arrows out of the boss and – most importantly – how to look for any that might have taken a detour into the grass!

Four quick tips for your first day

  1. What to wear: Wear comfortable clothes that aren't too baggy (you don't want the string catching on a loose sleeve). Closed-toe shoes (like trainers) are a must – no sandals or flip-flops allowed!
  2. Tie it back: If you have long hair, bring a bobble to tie it back
  3. Bring your curiosity: No question is too silly. Our coaches love the sport and want to share it with you
  4. Adaptations: Archery can be adapted for most disabilities and bows can be shot shooting or standing so have a chat to the coaches about any adaptations you may need. Some clubs have age restrictions so check for any age limits if you're bringing children
